Sofrus Explained
Sofrus is a unique opportunity. The skill and occupation of Sofrus is unlike any other job or hobby. It is a unique and special calling, providing Jews of all levels of observance with the proper tools to fulfill Hashem's will and the Holy commandments He has given to the Jewish Nation at Har Sinai.
Sofrus, in fact, is important for and benefits all; men, women and children. Its three main factors are Sifrei Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzos, commonly referred to by its acronym, STAM. All three are required by Jewish law and benefit the user to great extent.
The Torah commands every Jew to write a Sefer Torah. It is the ultimate mitzvah which Hashem incorporated among the 613 Mitzvos of the Torah. When a person performs this significant Mitzvah, it is as though he would have completed each and every single Mitzvah of the Torah. Furthermore, the Mitzvah of Kriyas Hatorah, reading of the Torah scroll, is done every Monday, Thursday and Shabbos Kodesh in every Shul or Beis Medrash.
The mitzvah of Tefillin applies to every Jewish boy from his thirteenth birthday on, otherwise known as Bar Mitzvah. Tefillin serves as a rememberance of the redemption of the Jewish people from Egypt, from Galus Mitzrayim. Through the Mitzvah of donning Tefillin, one proves his Shibdus, his commitment, to our Father, our King, Hashem Yisbareich.
Mezuzos, which are placed on every doorpost of a Jewish home, have great effect on all people residing in the home. Mezuzos generate protection upon every room which has one on its door. Furthermore, a Mezuzah is a segulah, a good omen, to life, as the Gemara (Talmud) asks, "Is it so that only men need life?" The Gemara concludes that Mezuzos are here to benefit both men and women.
It is highly essential that the three above mentioned mitzvos be done in full accordance to Halacha. The Halacha requires that Sifrei Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzos all be handwritten vs. printed using modern technology. In addition, the writer must have his concentration set on the Mitzvah and while writing he must contemplate that through his action of writing he is presently fulfilling the mitzvah of Tefillin, Mezuzah or the writing of a Sefer Torah.
The supplies one uses for Sofrus must all be kosher and mehudar. The ink used for writing may not come from a non-kosher animal. Ink used for writing Tefillin, Mezuzos or Sifrei Torah must be kosher. The parchment it is being written on must be from a kosher animal and processed in accordance to Halacha, Jewish law.
Throughout the years, technological advances have made the work of Sofrus considerably easier to perform. Any available machinery and technology may be used to simplify the work load for the Sofer, to aid in perfecting the tools, to perpare the materials, etc. However, the actual inscription of a Sefer Torah, Tefillin or Mezuzah must still be done manually, using ink and quill in accordance to Halacha, without any technological help.
