Question:

There is a beautiful Sefer in a nursing home in west orange, NJ, where I once lived. It needs a lot of work. My question is: does a sofer use his own Mesorah or does he try to mimic the original sofer? This Sefer has many extra tagim, sometimes multiple rows of tagim and a lot of unusual letters that I have seen in safrus seforim (the spiral pe, the inverted nun Sofit in Charan, etc.) it would be a shame to erase the work and beauty of the prior sofer.

Answers:

  • if the work needed to be done, is to add ink on the letters a Sofer wont change the way it was written

Regarding the custom Tefillin page, I have a few questions: 1) Inside RTBY-Mechaber, what is the difference between Script 1,2,3 and 4? 2) In "Battim" when it says orientation, does that mean which hand or does it mean something else? 3) In "Battim" whsat exactly are the sizes for small, medium and large? 4) On the Shel Rosh which option is the "Dalet" knot? Thank you so much!

Answers:

  • the custom tefillin section is still in development statues, soon will be available images of a few parshiyos to choose from. orientation means if you are righty or lefty.

Question:

I wish to make my kosher Rav Rashi yad parshios into a Rav Tam parshios. I understand that I may just cut the parchment, reorder them for Rav Tam, and reconnect them. Will this Rav Tam parshiot still be kosher?

Answers:

  • If used (you put them on) already as RASHI is not allowed by halacha to change them to RABEINU-TAM. if not, check at the end of "vehoyu im shamo'a" if there a space of 9 letters till the end (the last shura should be shorter then the upper shura's) then you are probably allowed to change, but best will be if you can ask your local rav.
